Cheryl Burke Dance/Starlite Dance Club Review

By Shiaw-Ling Lai

A long-time staple of the Silicon Valley dance scene, Starlite Dance Club—now partnered with Cheryl Burke’s Dance—is one of the oldest and largest dance establishments in the lower Bay Area. Located just off of Shoreline and 101 in Mountain View, the studio is known for their multi-room dance floors and the "star" lights displays in the ballrooms. Filled with friendly staff and featuring a large selection of dances, the studio has maintained a long-held reputation as well as one of the most beloved dance staples in the Bay.

Startlite embraces students at all levels of skill, and teaches all major forms of ballroom and latin dance. Basic lessons might include the Waltz, Hustle, Rhumba, Two-step, Salsa, Quickstep, and Foxtrot, for example, and the studio even includes some more exotic dances, such as the Argentine Tango and the Lindy Hop.

Beginners should take advantage of the fantastic value of the Friday night dance classes and parties, which feature up to three 45-minute dance lessons for up to three dances. A total of over 2 hours in lessons for only $14! Newcomers are warmly welcomed, and the Starlite professional dance staff is always on hand and happy to help. (If you're nervous and uncertain of what to wear and do for your first time, check out their Dance Etiquette FAQ page on the website for tips on what to do.) Friday night attendees are encouraged to stay for the after hours til midnight dance party to practice their new moves with other beginners, as well as the staff. It’s a great way to meet people while exploring different types of ballroom dances, especially if you're thinking of taking regular lessons.

Of course, the studio also offers a variety of higher level classes for the committed dancer, depending on your availability. The drop-in Thursday classes are especially convenient for the intermediate level student on-the-go looking for a occasional lesson to polish their steps. For students with more time, the series group classes are a great, cost-effective way of learning the dances you love in-depth. One-on-one private lessons are recommended for the dancer who needs a more focused learning approach, and advanced and professional level footwork are also available by appointment.

Weddign couples can purchase special "packages" ranging from 5-35 private dance lessons, depending on the available time and need. For best results, try the medium-level “Dazzle Your Guests” bundle offering 10 to 19 private lessons plus 2 four-week group classes and 4 party passes starting at $630.

Specific information on classes and times can all be found online at http://www.starlitedanceclub.com/ as well as helpful guides and ongoing promotional deals. Happy dancing!
